FreeState is preparing for winter weather, just like our members are. Here are some quick tips on how you can stay warm in the event of a power outage.

Avoid Losing Heat

  • Conservation of heat is important during a winter weather power outage. Once the heat stops working the temperature in the house could drop five to 10 degrees and there is really no way to get it back. The best thing to do is trap the heat. Here are some tips to trap heat.
  • Roll up towels to block the bottom of any exterior doors.
  • Windows that provide sunshine may be able to heat up a room. If the sun is shining and coming through a window, use that heat. Otherwise keep curtains closed to help keep heat in.
  • Get cozy! Move everyone into one room and block off other rooms. Gather up blankets, sleeping bags, flashlights and layers.
  • If you own a tent, pitch it in the living room! Have a family camp out inside the tent to retain as much body heat as possible.

Generators
If your home has a generator make sure you have enough fuel to keep the generator going as long as you may need it. Always operate your generator safely. And only plug in to the generator what you absolutely need.

Fire up the fireplace
If you home has a fireplace utilize it to help heat up a room. Please be safe when utilizing a fireplace and conserve wood by using the fireplace intermittently.

If You Are Not Home
If you need to leave your home to find warmth for whatever reason, please only do so when it is safe to do so. Take these precautions before you leave.

  • Unplug electronic devices
  • Shut off the main water value to the house and drain any water from faucets to prevent pipes from freezing or bursting
  • Make sure all doors and windows are closed and secured.
