Since the 1930s, not-for-profit electric cooperatives have provided power to members, maintaining a commitment to reliable electricity and high-quality service at cost. 

On January 1, 2017, FreeState Electric Cooperative was formed from the consolidation of Leavenworth-Jefferson Electric Cooperative and Kaw Valley Electric Cooperative, continuing the values and services established in 1940 and 1937. 

FreeState emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and flexibility, prioritizing transparency and communication to maintain a member-centric mindset. 

Governed by trustees who are also members, FreeState's mission is to be forward-thinking and exceed member expectations. The cooperative's core values—transparency, ethics, safety, dedication, progressiveness, and respect—guide every decision.
