Cooperative Month

As a member of FreeState, you own your cooperative and have the power to vote, ensuring that the management works for you. FreeState is governed locally by nine elected members, not by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC). This local governance allows members to directly impact decisions that affect everyone, including those making the decisions.

Your membership is crucial, and engaging with the cooperative helps you stay informed about initiatives and decisions made on your behalf. FreeState is committed to educating, being transparent, and accountable to its members.

One significant difference between a utility cooperative and an investor-owned utility is capital credits (patronage). If the cooperative's financial health permits, trustees may decide to retire capital credits, returning money to members simply to pay their electric bills. This practice reflects FreeState's not-for-profit nature, focusing on serving members rather than generating profit.

Register To Win

FreeState operates on seven guiding principles, which every employee takes seriously. The cooperative is not just a power provider but a trusted energy partner, working to empower communities and enhance lives. Employees support local causes both at work and in their personal lives, demonstrating a commitment to improving the quality of life for friends, families, and neighbors.

The cooperative difference lies in living and working alongside those served. FreeState is a not-for-profit electric cooperative its members own, making each home or business a part-owner of the utility. As a member and consumer, you are more than just a customer; you are an integral part of the cooperative.
