For many veterans, the return to civilian life is a new fight—a fight against the invisible scars of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One organization has committed to helping our heroes find peace, purpose, and hope in this battle: Horses and Heroes (H&H).
On Tuesday, August 20, FreeState Electric Cooperative (FEC) made history by presenting H&H with the largest gift in its 12 years of CoBank Sharing Success participation—a total of $26,947.
“We are service-minded and invest in the communities and customers we serve,” said Jeanine Murphy, President of the FEC board. “This is the cooperative difference in action.”
Employees and trustees raised $16,947 internally, a record-breaking amount. Add a $10,000 CoBank Sharing Success grant to the fundraising efforts, and H&H will be able to provide therapies to those in need.
“We had 100% participation again this year,” said Chris Parr, FEC CEO. “I’m beyond proud to be a part of this cooperative effort – to serve more than electricity to our communities.”
Established in 2014, H&H provides the healing and learning benefits of Equine-Assisted Therapy to military and first responder families.
“Unresolved trauma can negatively impact our physical, social, and emotional health,” said Julie Baker, founder and executive director of H&H.
“H&H's unique and integrated programs are designed to optimize natural healing at your pace, confidentially, and with the support of our amazing, rescued horses.”
H&H uses licensed practitioners, certified coaches, and qualified staff to offer emotional, physical, and spiritual growth to program participants. The organization’s work offers veterans and first responders a unique and powerful way to reconnect and set out on a healing path.
“Equine therapy has been shown to significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and emotional trauma,” Baker said.
The check reveal was one of pride and heartfelt emotion, as employees who had contributed to the fundraising efforts saw the direct impact in the faces of those representing the organization, including Baker. The moment exemplified one of the cooperative principles—community and service.
“This donation is not just about the money," said Parr. "It’s about standing by our heroes and saying, 'We’re here for you.'"
The funds will enable H&H to provide the tools needed to heal and thrive.
Through the generosity of the cooperative and the dedication of H&H, the healing journey continues, one step—and one hoofbeat—at a time.
